[The Humidor - H. Upman Corsario]

Whenever I cannot decide which brand of cigar to purchase, it seems that H. Upman is always my stand by. In deed, one of the best characteristics of the H. Upman line is that they always seem to be readily available at the local cigar shop, when other brands of equal caliber have been on back order for months.

The H. Upman Corsario, which retails for about $5.00 each ($180 for a box of 50) is arguably one of the finer cigars available. A rotund cigar, it measures five and one half inches long, and has a ring gauge of 50. The Cigar Aficionado magazine gave the Corsario a rating of 84, placing it roughly in the middle of the very good to excellent category.

Most recently, I enjoyed this particular cigar on my veranda, while watching the lightning display of a magnificent summer monsoon. From the beginning, the Corsario had an extremely good draw. My first observation, however, was that this cigar had a particularly salty flavor. This salty aroma makes it a perfect cigar to savor after a dinner of southwestern cuisine. In fact, I enjoyed one of these cigars after a New Mexico style dinner, and the normally salty flavor took on the flavor of roasted Hatch green chilies - a most pleasant surprise.

A medium length cigar, they smoke on average for a little longer than forty five minutes. The burn was slightly uneven from start to finish, however, the draw remained impeccable. For those who just can’t put a good cigar down, this cigar can be smoked beyond the band without getting hot and dry, or unravelling.

Testimony to the quality of its roll, the Corsario only dropped it’s ash, on average, once during the course of the evening - and about one half hour into the cigar.

The H. Upman Corsario comes in a tall Spanish Cedar box. And, unlike many cigars, does not come individually wrapped in plastic. Yet, it retains the perfect balance of moisture. This cigar will keep for a long period of time in your humidor. However, between it’s excellent flavor and relative abundance, it probably won’t have to.
