Catalina Island, California

[Heading to sea] All of my ventures to Catalina Island have started from the Phoenix area. However, the adventure truley begins when you head out to sea.

I have flown out of high mountain strips, landed on sun baked, below sea-level strips, and flown out of some of the busiest Class B airports in the country. However, there is nothing that can compare with the feeling you get the first time you cross over the sandy shoreline and head out over the vast blue ocean.

Avalon airport is located on the north end of Catalina Island. It sits on top of a ridge at a whopping 1,602 feet above sea level. It's lofty location has earned the airport the nickname "the airport in the sky." [The Airport In The Sky]
[Approach to RWY 22] Runway 22 has been in use every time I have visited the island, and is the designated "no wind" runway. Pilots are advised to call ahead for weather info at (800) 255-8700.

The airport terminal features a large map of the island, a visitors center, gift shop, and restaurant. It is a private field, however, and they do charge a per-person landing fee. Fuel is not available on field either, so you will want to tank up on the mainland just before or after your visit. [Approach to RWY 21]
[Heading to sea] The airport restaurant features indoor and outdoor dining. If the weather is nice (and it almost always is) most people choose to eat outside on the patio.

I guess the menu is well rounded, however, I frankly do not remember. Every time I visit I order their world famous "Big Buffalo" burger.

This brings me to one potential traffic hazard...

[Where Buffalo Roam]
Buffalo roam the island near the airport. I believe the airport is fenced, but you never know with these guys.

Departing the island to the northeast (enroute to San Diego) brings you over town. [Avalon Marina]
